About the Scam
Preying upon mourners suffering a recent death is one of the cruelest swindles. The con artist obtains information from death notices and sends authentic-looking bills to the family who pays them without question. Other postal frauds involve soliciting orders for non-existing products, chain letters, and sending merchandise that was never ordered.
How to Avoid
- Verify all questionable bills.
- Contact the Better Business Bureau before ordering from any unknown company.
- Avoid using a credit card for mail orders.
